Horse Chestnut Trees (Aesculus Hippocastrum) are native to the Balkans, but they were only known there from 1500.During the Ice Ages , like other trees they had to migrate Southward, but their seeds ( conkers )  could not be wind blown, so it was a long time before they arrived back in Europe .  In 1562 a western Ambassador saw Turkish Soldiers feeding conkers to their horses (as medecine ) .Hence the name given to the trees in the West

Left: Maritime pine, native to the W. Mediterranean, mostly from sea level to 600 m. It has needles in pairs.
Centre: Bhutan Pine, from the Himalayas; altitude 1800-1300   
It has needles in pairs.
Right:Pyrenean Pine, which grows in the Cevennes, Pyrenees& Central Spain. Its bark becomes deeply fissured . Fast growing, it's timber is often used for making paper.
All pines have medical properties, they can soothe coughs, clear congestion & boost circulation & the immune system.
