Horse Chestnut Trees (Aesculus Hippocastrum) are native to the Balkans, but they were only known there from 1500.During the Ice Ages , like other trees they had to migrate Southward, but their seeds ( conkers ) could not be wind blown, so it was a long time before they arrived back in Europe . In 1562 a western Ambassador saw Turkish Soldiers feeding conkers to their horses (as medecine ) .Hence the name given to the trees in the West |
Left: Maritime pine, native to the W. Mediterranean,
mostly from sea level to 600 m. It has needles in pairs. |
